Ransomware is one of the most devious types of modern malware out there. Once you’re infected, the program encrypts your local files and locks you out of them until you pay a fee, and that’s only if the hackers choose to keep their promise instead of extorting you for more money forever. Ransomware can not only inconvenience an individual but also hobble network for crucial infrastructure like at a hospital. Fortunately, knowledge of ransomware has become widespread enough to most know how to avoid it.
Unfortunately, even the smartest folks sometimes make dumb decision when they’re too horny. And hackers are taking advantage with a new strain of Android ransomware that pretends to be mobile pornography.
Android/Filecoder.C is an emerging new threat that’s been picked up by cybersecurity researchers at firms such as ESET. The ransomware APK first began to spread itself on places like Reddit and other forums through HTML links and QR codes promising porn like a VR sex simulation app. Apps like that do exist (or so I’m told) but this isn’t one of them.
Instead, the ransomware locks users out of their phones until the pay the approximately $100 Bitcoin ransom. It also threatens to delete your files after three days if you don’t pay. Meanwhile, while your phone is infected the virus sends copies of itself to your contacts via SMS text messages hoping to snag more victims. The messages are even personalized with names and dozens of different language options.
There are plenty of free and safe ways to enjoy porn on the internet. You don’t have to click on shady links or download random files and potentially wreck your phone in the process.
